Peterson replaces injured Langeveldt

November 06, 2004 12:24 IST

Robin Peterson will replace the injured Charl Langeveldt in South Africa's squad for their two-Test tour of India, the United Cricket Board (UCB) said on Friday.

Langeveldt withdrew on Friday with a back injury he sustained in a domestic match at the weekend.

Left-arm spinner Peterson's call-up restores the balance of the squad, which was affected when Langeveldt, a fast bowler, was named to replace Nicky Boje.

Boje, a left-arm spinner, withdrew on Wednesday to avoid the possibility of being detained by the Delhi police as part of an investigation into match-fixing.

Peterson would probably not have made the squad were it not for the fact that batsman and part-time leg spinner Jacques Rudolph has a back injury and has been advised by doctors not to bowl for three months.

"With Jacques Rudolph unable to bowl at all we felt that Peterson would offer another spin alternative," selector Omar Henry said in a UCB media release.

Langeveldt, 29, has hurt the left side of his lower back and will be out for two to three weeks.

The injury has robbed him of the chance to make his Test debut.

Peterson, 25, has played four Tests in which he has taken seven wickets at an average of 44.71.

South Africa depart for India on November 11.

The Tests are scheduled for Kanpur, from November 20 to 24, and Kolkata, from November 28 to December 2.
