Statistical highlights: India vs Pakistan, 1st ODI

Rajneesh Gupta | March 13, 2004 22:31 IST

This match was the 2112th one-day international in cricket history.

This match was India's 557th and Pakistan's 582nd one-day international and the 87th between the two sides – 16th on Pakistani soil.

India's total of 349 for seven is their highest ever against Pakistan beating the 316 for seven at Dhaka on 18-01-1998. The total is also India's fifth highest in ODIs.

India's total also equalled the highest ever score by any side against Pakistan in a 50-over game. Sri Lanka had also made an identical score (though losing nine wickets) in the opening match of Singer Cup at Singapore on 02-04-1996. England had made 363 for seven against Pakistan at Nottingham on 20-08-1992 but that was in a 55-over game.

India's total is also the second highest total made against a host country after South Africa's 363 for three against Zimbabwe at Bulawayo QSC on 23-09-2001. Incidentally the previous highest total against Pakistan in Pakistan was 324 for eight by Australia at this same ground on 06-11-1998. Just for the record, India's previous highest against Pakistan in Pakistan was 266 for six also on this ground on 30-09-1997.

100 of the Indian innings came in only 10.2 overs. It is the fastest team hundred for India in ODIs. The previous record was against Bangladesh at Colombo SSC on 24-07-1997 when India scored their 100 in 11 overs. Incidentally the ODI record of fastest team hundred is held by Sri Lanka as they reached the three figure mark in just 9.1 overs against Pakistan at Singapore on 07-04-1996.

Rahul Dravid (99) became only the third Indian and 19th batsman in ODI history to miss a century by one run. Krish Srikkanth (v England at Cuttack on 27-12-1984) and VVS Laxman (v West Indies at Nagpur on 09-11-2002) are the other Indians to be dismissed on 99.

Dravid also became the third batsman to make a score of 99 against Pakistan after West Indian Richie Richardson (unbeaten 99 at Sharjah on 15-11-1985) and England's Chris Broad (at The Oval on 21-05-1997).

Dravid's innings is the highest for India in Pakistan beating Dilip Vengsarkar's unbeaten 94 (off 102 balls) at Sialkot on 31-10-1984.

Dravid, on 9, completed his 5000 runs in 167 'away' matches. He became the fourth Indian batsman after Sachin Tendulkar (8468 runs in 226 matches), Sourav Ganguly (6721 in 188) and Mohammad Azharuddin (6215 in 221) to do so.

Abdul Razzaq, by conceding 83 runs in his nine overs, recorded the worst figures for Pakistan in a nine-over spell. The previous record was on the name of Azhar Mahmood who conceded 73 runs in his 9 overs against South Africa at Nairobi Gymkhana on 29-09-1996.

Razzaq now also holds the dubious distinction of conceding most runs in a match for Pakistan at home soil. Danish Kaneria, who had conceded 76 runs in his ten overs against Pakistan at Lahore on 29-11-2003 held the previous record.

The 20 no-balls sent down by Pakistan bowlers is a new world record. The previous record was of 19 no-balls conceded by Zimbabwe against Australia at Perth on 04-02-2001.

Inzamam-ul-Haq (122 off 102 balls) scored his third hundred in 46th matches against India, this was the ninth century of his ODI 0career. He now aggregates 1577 runs in 43 innings against India which takes him past Salim Malik (1535 runs in 52 matches) and Ijaz Ahmed (1533 runs in 53 matches). Now only Saeed Anwar (2002 runs in 50 matches) aggregates more runs against India for Pakistan.

Inzamam's innings is the highest by a Pakistan captain against India. He obliterated Aamir Sohail's 105 at Sharjah on 12-04-1996.

Inzamam has now aggregated 1981 runs in 55 matches on Pakistani soil – most by any batsman. He moved ahead of Javed Miandad's aggregate of 1976 runs from 68 matches.

Pakistan's 344 for eight is the highest ever score made by a side batting second beating Australia's match-winning 330 for four against South Africa at Port Elizabeth on 06-04-2002.

The match aggregate of 693 runs for the loss of 15 wickets is the highest run-aggregate in a ODI beating the previous record of 664 for the loss of 19 wickets in the match between Sri Lanka and Pakistan at Singapore on 02-04-1996.

The victory margin of five runs is India's second narrowest against Pakistan – home or away - after their four-run win at Quetta on 01-10-1978.

As many as 316 runs came in boundaries in the match with India scoring 160 and Pakistan 156. This was the third highest runs in boundaries in a ODI. The record is 378 runs between Sri Lanka and Kenya at Kandy on 06-03-1996.

Sourav Ganguly became only the second Indian skipper to win his first match on Pakistan soil after Bishen Singh Bedi.

Ganguly has now won three games out of five as a captain against Pakistan. This gives him a success percentage of 60% - highest for an Indian captain. Sunil Gavaskar enjoyed the success percentage of 57.14 from seven matches.

Inzamam-ul-Haq won his 20th Man of the match award. Now only Saeed Anwar (27) and Wasim Akram (21) have won more awards for Pakistan. The award was also his fourth against India.
