Gilchrist, Symonds face dissent charges

February 23, 2004 21:30 IST

Australia's Adam Gilchrist and Andrew Symonds will face charges of dissent on Tuesday after becoming embroiled in a controversial incident during the second one-day international against Sri Lanka at Dambulla on Sunday.

International Cricket Council match referee Mike Proctor decided to hold the hearings after examining videotapes of the incident.

Symonds was initially given out leg before wicket during the match by umpire Peter Manuel, who then changed his mind and recalled the batsman after consulting with fellow umpire Billy Bowden.

Proctor praised Manuel's courage as well as Sri Lanka captain Marvan Atapattu, who gracefully accepted the change of decision, but decided to charge the Australians over their initial reaction.

If found guilty, they could be reprimanded, fined up to half their match fee or banned for one match. Sri Lanka won the match by one run to level the five-match series at 1-1.
