Virender Sehwag engaged to Delhi maiden

February 22, 2004 20:28 IST

Set to open a new innings of his life, opener Virender Sehwag on Sunday got engaged to Delhi girl Arti Singh at a solemn ceremony.

Sehwag, clad in a white suit, slipped the engagement ring into golden saree draped Arti's finger at the function attended by close relatives and friends at City Park Hotel, Pitampura.

A simple and reserved person off the field, the 24-year-old star cricketer was impressed with Arti's down-to-earth nature and will tie the nuptial knot on April 22, four days after the Indian team returns from Pakistan, family sources said.

The 'prince of Najafgarh' was stumped by the 'homely' maiden from Delhi, who was also the 'the unanimous choice of our family', they said.

Arti, who belongs to a middle-class Jat family, is in her early twenties and currently pursuing a diploma course. "She would keep home for Viru," sources added.

Sehwag is expected to be picked for the 40-day tour of Pakistan where India will play three Tests and a five-match one-day series.

A security cordon by the Delhi police and hotel security staff was thrown around the venue and mediapersons were not allowed to enter the hall where the ceremony took place.

Later the couple posed for photographs for some time but did not speak to the waiting journalists.
