Pakistan recall Afridi for Champions Trophy

August 07, 2004 16:33 IST

Pakistan have recalled all rounder Shahid Afridi to their squad for the International Cricket Council (ICC) Champions Trophy in England in September.

Chief selector Wasim Bari said Afridi, who was dropped during the series against India in March, had been included for the 12-team tournament because coach Bob Woolmer and captain Inzamam-ul-Haq wanted more utility players in the squad.

"Afridi has replaced leg spinner Danish Kaneria and we have decided to give a chance to opener Salman Butt," said Bari on Saturday in explaining the two changes from the team that played in the Asia Cup tournament in Sri Lanka.

Butt, a left-handed batsman who has played one Test against Bangladesh last year, has replaced Imran Nazir.

The team will also take part in a triangular tournament with India and Australia in the Netherlands from August 21 to 28.

Squad: Inzamam-ul-Haq (captain), Yasir Hameed, Imran Farhat, Salman Butt, Yousuf Youhana, Younis Khan, Moin Khan, Shoaib Malik, Abdur Razzaq, Shahid Afridi, Shoaib Akhtar, Muhammad Sami, Shabbir Ahmed, Rana Naveed-ul-Hasan.
