Gilchrist proposes Waugh-Tendulkar Trophy

October 25, 2003 13:23 IST

Australian vice-captain Adam Gilchrist has proposed that India and Australia give their "history, tradition and strong rivalry" a boost by playing each other on January 26 the day, which holds great historic importance for both nations.

While India celebrates Republic Day on January 26, for the Kangaroos it is the Australia Day, and it is this unique coincidence that spurred Gilchrist to come up with this idea.

"Given the passion for the game in the two countries, I think it is a good idea to have a cricket match on this day. It could be an annual affair or once in two years, or probably in four years to start with," said the wicketkeeper-batsman as the two teams geared for the tri-series match in Gwalior on Sunday.

Gilchrist said the match could be on the lines of the Gavaskar-Border trophy and suggested that it be named after the two icons of modern day cricket Steve Waugh and Sachin Tendulkar.

It would be a great way to pay tribute to these two cricketers, he said.

"I discussed it with Waugh who was thrilled with the idea but I am yet to discuss with Sachin."

Gilchrist also said that the match be alternately hosted by India and Australia.
