Gibbs survived a dropped catch and another close shave as he scored 16 and skipper Graeme Smith five in South Africa's total of 23 by tea after Pakistan were dismissed for 401 half an hour before tea.

South Africa wrist spinner Paul Adams took Test-best figures of seven for 128 as Pakistan were bowled out for 401 shortly before tea.

Adams, who had dismissed both openers at the start of the innings, took five wickets for 58 in 22 overs as Pakistan, replying to South Africa's first innings of 320, were restricted to lead 81.

The 26-year-old Adams, with his torturous action, bowled 45 overs in all as he took five of the last six wickets to fall, with tailenders Shoaib Akhtar, Mohammad Sami and Danish Kaneria managing just one run between them.

Resuming on 275 for four, Pakistan lost Shoaib Malik for 47 as he was bowled by Adams following a 99-run stand with debutant Asim Kamal to spark the collapse.

Kamal, 49 overnight, reached 99 shortly after lunch before being bowled by Andre Nel before Adams wrapped up the innings. Kamal hit 11 fours and a six.

Adams's previous best bowling in 42 Tests was six for 55 in his fifth Test against India at Kanpur in December 1996.
