New payment structure for domestic cricketers

August 25, 2003 23:23 IST

The Board of Control for Cricket in India will introduce a new payment structure for domestic cricketers from the coming season, Board secretary S K Nair said on Monday.

"We would like to introduce the new payment system for domestic cricketers from the coming season by November," he told reporters in Bangalore.

"We are hopeful of completing all the discussions," he said.

There is no timeframe [for introducing the system], Nair hastened to add, but said "whatever the decision, it is going to be implemented from this season".

"We have already discussed percentage and all that. All the matters have been discussed but not finalised yet," he said, adding the new system might be linked to a welfare scheme.

A domestic cricketer, who has played for eight years, would be able to get a substantial amount from the welfare fund, Nair said.
