Adams eases SA to victory

April 27, 2003 14:04 IST

Left-arm spinner Paul Adams took 10 wickets in a Test for the first time as South Africa wrapped up an emphatic innings and 60 run victory in the first Test against Bangladesh on Sunday.

Resuming on 185 for five overnight in their second innings, still trailing by 112 runs, Bangladesh were dismissed for 237 early on day four to give South Africa a one-nil lead in the two-Test series.

Debutant Charl Willoughby began the slide with his first wicket in Test cricket, youngster Mohammed Ashraful (28) driving straight to mid-off after scoring  10 runs from the over.

Adams then struck twice in quick succession. Akram Khan (16) undoing a good start when he pulled a long hop down Boeta Dippenaar's throat at fine leg and Mushrafe Mortaza was well caught at slip by Shaun Pollock for a duck when he edged a delivery, which turned sharply away from him.

Bangladesh were soon nine down when South African captain Graeme Smith picked up his first Test wicket, his opposite number Khaled Mahmud leaning forward to a gentle off break and being stumped by Mark Boucher.

Adams wrapped up victory just under an hour into the morning session when Enamul Haque (11) offered a routine return chance.

Adams finished with five for 69 to go with his first innings haul of five for 37.

The second Test begins on May 1 in Dhaka.
