Nasser Hussain's 155 was the fourth highest score by an England captain against India. The highest scores being: 333 by Graham Gooch at Lord's 1990; 183 not out by Mike Gatting at Birmingham in 1986 and 160 by Mike Atherton at Nottingham in 1996.

Simon Jones' 44 was the second highest score by a England number 10 on debut. He failed to better the record of Paul Allott, who in his debut innings had made 52 not out, while batting at number ten against Australia at Manchester in August 1981.

However, Jones' score was the second highest by a number ten English batsman on debut. He went past the Alex Kennedy's 41 not out against South Africa at Johannesburg in December 1922. For the record, the highest such score against India still remains as the 57 by Australian Gavin Robertson at Chennai in March 1998.

Virender Sehwag, who in his previous six innings have never batted above the number six position, was opening the Indian innings for the first time. In his previous two innings he had scores of 66 (v England at Bangalore in December 2001) and 74 (v Zimbabwe at Delhi in March 2002).

The 126 run partnership between Virender Sehwag and Rahul Dravid was the best for India at Lord's for the second wicket obliterating the previous best of 59 runs between Sunil Gavaskar and Mohinder Amarnath in 1986.

Alec Stewart became the most capped player for England, while appearing in his 119th Test match. He went past the tally of former teammate Graham Gooch who had appeared in 118 matches from 1975 to 1994-95. Stewart has been playing in Tests since February 1990.

Glamorgan's right arm pace bowler and left-handed batsman Simon Jones became the 610th player to represent England in Tests.

He became the 11th father-son combination to play in Tests for England. His father Jeff Jones was a left-arm pace bowler who played in 15 Tests from 1964 to 1968. Interestingly, Simon's father Jeff also made his Test debut against India, in 1964 at the Brabourne Stadium.

This was the first time an England side has fielded three sons of Test-playing fathers, alongside Alec Stewart and Mark Butcher in same Test match. Both Mickey Stewart and Alan Butcher have also played for England.

Simon Jones also became the 14th Welsh-born England Test cricketer.
