NatWest Tri-Series
India vs England, 5th ODI at Chester-le-Street

  • Scorecard | Match report | Images
  • Alec Stewart became the first Englishman and the 65th player in LOIs to appear in 150 matches. Stewart had made his LOI debut way back in October 1989 during the Nehru Cup tournament in India.
  • Sourav Ganguly provided the fifth instance of an Indian batsmen to be dismissed off the first ball of the match. Incidentally he became the first to do so on two occasions - he was dismissed first ball by Sri Lankan Chaminda Vaas at Mumbai in 1997. The other Indians to do so are Sunil Gavaskar (in 1981), Ravi Shastri (1985) and Virendra Sehwag (2001).
  • Meanwhile, Darren Gough became the third Englishman after Greg Thomas (in 1987) and Dougie Brown (in 1997) to claim a wicket of the very first ball of the match.
  • The partnership of 169 runs between Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid was the best for India against England for the fourth wicket. The pair bettered the previous best of unbeaten 164 between Vinod Kambli and Tendulkar at Jaipur on 18-1-1993.
  • The pair also bettered the fourth wicket partnership by any team against England in LOIs, surpassing the previous best of 168 between Australians Mark Waugh and Allan Border at Birmingham on 21-5-1993.
  • It was also by far the best for the fourth wicket at this venue bettering the unbeaten 70 between Australians Ricky Ponting and Tom Moody against Bangladesh on 27-5-1999.
  • Sachin Tendulkar who had a highest score of 31 (at Nottingham in 1990) against the home team in England recorded his first ever hundred against this team. His previous best was the 91 he made at Sharjah on 11-12-1997. By scoring his maiden hundred against England - Tendulkar has now registered three figure scores against all Test playing nations, with the exception of Bangladesh, but has four against Kenya!!
  • Incidentally only two Tendulkar's 32 hundreds (in 291 matches) have come while batting at number four. His only other hundred was the unbeaten 140 came against Kenya at Bristol during the last World Cup in 1999.
  • The total of 285-4 was the highest by India against England obliterating the previous best of 282-5 at Nottingham on 20-7-1990 in a 55 over match.
