Sachin Tendulkar (193) who missed his double century by seven runs became the fourth Indian batsman to register scores in the 190s. Budhi Kunderan (192 in 1964), Mohammad Azharuddin (199 in 1986 & 192 in 1990) and Rahul Dravid (190 in 2000) are the others to miss a Test double century within 10 runs.
Tendulkar also joins Englishman Geoff Boycott (191 in 1977) and Australian Matthew Elliott (199 in 1997) who are the other batsmen who have scores in the 190s at this venue.
The 150 runs conceded by Andy Caddick (40.1-5-150-3) was the maximum conceded by any English bowler against India in a Test innings. Former pace bowler Neil Williams (41-5-148-2) had previously conceded maximum runs in an innings - at the Oval in August 1990.
India's 628-8 decl was its fifth highest score in Tests. However it was India's highest ever in an away Test match bettering the previous best of 606-9d also made against England at the Oval in August 1990.
It was India's eighth score over 600-plus runs in Tests and its only third such score abroad. India's first ever such score - 600-4 decl. came against Australia at Sydney in January 1986 and its second came at the Oval in 1990 (see above).
India's total was the second highest team score made at this ground since its first ever Test match in 1899. Australia had made 653-4 decl in 1993, which still remains the best at Headingley.
The wicket of Robert Key was Zaheer Khan's 50th of this career in his 19th match. He becomes the 28th Indian and the 268th bowler in Test cricket history to achieve this landmark. Zaheer now becomes the only second Indian left-arm pace bowler to take fifty-plus wickets after Karshan Ghavri.
The partnership of 70 runs between Alec Stewart and Ashley Giles was England's best against India for the 8th wicket at this venue bettering the previous best of 35 between Roly Jenkins and Jim Laker during the 1952 series.
Stewart playing in his 427th first-class match reached his 25000th run of his career when his score reached 63 during his unbeaten innings of 71 runs. Incidentally Stewart has been playing first-class cricket since 1981.
