Virender Sehwag and Sanjay Bangar became the 10th opening pair to represent India in the last two years.
Rahul Dravid (110 not out, while on 30) became the seventh Indian batsman and the 51st batsman in Test cricket history to reach the aggregate of 5000 runs. By reaching this landmark in his 63rd Test match, he becomes the second quickest among Indians after Sunil Gavaskar, who needed just 52 matches for his 5000th run in 1979.
Dravid hundred which was his 12th of his career, became the second Indian batsman after teammate Sourav Ganguly to record back to back Test hundreds in England. Dravid had made 115 in the second innings at Trent Bridge. Ganguly in 1996, had made 131 and 136 at Lord's and Nottingham, which incidentally was his first two innings of his Test career.
The 170-run partnership between Bangar and Dravid, is not the only India's best at this venue for the 2nd wicket but also on England soil. The pair obliterated the previous best of 168 between Farokh Engineer and Ajit Wadekar in 1967 at this very ground.
Meanwhile, the Bangar-Dravid partnership was the second best for India against England for the second wicket. The pair just failed to better the record, which still remains as 192 between Engineer and Wadekar at the Brabourne Stadium in 1973.
Dravid when on 60, became the leading run-scorer in Tests this calendar year. He went past the run aggregate of 772 runs of West Indian Carl Hooper. Dravid at the end of the first day, has 823 runs in 10 matches.
