Lancashire sign Harbhajan Singh

Lancashire have beaten Sussex in the race to sign Harbhajan Singh.

The 22-year-old Indian off-spinner will be the second overseas player alongside Australian batsman Stuart Law to play for the Old Trafford county next season.

Lancashire cricket manager Mike Watkinson said: "We are delighted to have secured the services of one of the world's leading spin bowlers. Hopefully, his talents will be the perfect foil for our crop of very promising young pace bowlers."

Harbhajan, nicknamed the 'Turbanator', has taken 110 wickets in his Test career, at an average of 28.78.

The first Indian to take a Test hat-trick, he becomes the third Indian to play for Lancashire. Former wicketkeeper Farokh Engineer represented the county from 1968 to 1976 while Sourav Ganguly played for the team two seasons ago.

Former Indian Test fast bowler Javagal Srinath will be playing for Leicestershire for the remainder of the current season. He will be available for five County Championship matches and four one-day games and is likely to make his debut for the county in the floodlit match against Kent on August 21.

The 32-year-old, who spent several seasons with Gloucestershire, will replace Michael Bevan when he leaves to team up with the Australian one-day squad.

Meanwhile, Mohammad Kaif will turn out for Leicestershire in their championship match against Surrey on August 14. He was given special clearance by the England and Wales Cricket Board and Board of Control for Cricket in India..
