Mohandas Menon

2nd day of first Test at Georgetown, India vs West Indies

** Shivnarine Chanderpaul (140, when on 66) became the 20th West Indian and the 120th batsman overall in Tests to reach the landmark of 3000 runs. He was appearing in his 52nd Test and 86th innings. He now has 3074 runs (avg. 39.92).

** Carl Hooper (233, when on 133) became the sixth West Indian batsman to aggregate 1000 runs while leading the side. He now has 1100 runs (avg. 52.38) in 13 matches.

** Both Hooper (233) and Chanderpaul (140) posted their highest Test scores of their career. Hooper's previous best was the unbeaten 178 against Pakistan at St John's in May 1993, while Chanderpaul's best was the unbeaten 137, also against India at Bridgetown in March 1997.

** Incidentally, it was the first time the score of 233 was achieved by any batsman in Test cricket history and Hooper now holds this distinction.

** Hooper's double hundred was the first by a Test captain since October 1999, when Tendulkar made 217 against New Zealand at Ahmedabad.

** Hooper became the only second Test captain to score a double hundred while batting at number five. Australian Allan Border had scored an unbeaten 200 at this position against England at Leeds in July 1993.

** Hooper also just went ahead of the previous highest score by a number five batsman against India, which was earlier held by Zimbabwean Andy Flower - 232 (not out) at Nagpur in November 2000.

** Hooper's 233 was also the highest by a West Indian batsman at number five obliterating the unbeaten 208 by Jimmy Adams against New Zealand at St John's in April 1996 and the 208 by Viv Richards against Australia at Melbourne in December 1984.

** Hooper's 233 was the highest by a West Indian captain at home bettering the 219 by Denis Atkinson against Australia at Bridgetown in May 1955. However Clive Lloyd's unbeaten 242 also against India at the Wankhede Stadium remains the highest by a West Indian captain in Tests. For the record, the previous highest score by a Test captain at this venue was the 169 by Englishman Len Hutton in February 1954.

** Chanderpaul, incidentally became the first Guyanese batsman to score two Test hundreds at this venue. He had made 118 against England in February 1998. Out of the 31 Test hundreds scored by West Indian batsmen, only five Guyanese batsmen have made centuries here - two by Chanderpaul and one each by Rohan Kanhai (150 v England in March 1968), Alvin Kallicharran (100 not out v New Zealand in April 1972), Clive Lloyd (178 v Australia in April 1973) and Hooper (233).

** The fifth wicket partnership of 293 runs between Hooper and Chanderpaul surpassed the following landmarks:

  • at 72, the pair bettered West Indies' previous best at this venue against India for the 5th wicket (the previous best was 71 runs between Clyde Walcott and Leslie Wight in March 1953).
  • at 127, the pair bettered the previous best for the West Indies at this ground for the 5th wicket (the previous best was 126 runs between Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Jimmy Adams against England in April 1994)
  • at 143, the pair bettered the previous best by any team at this ground for the 5th wicket (the previous best was 142 runs between New Zealanders Martin Crowe and Jeremy Coney in April 1985).
  • at 220, the pair bettered West Indies' previous best against India for the 5th wicket (the previous best was 219 runs between Bruce Pairaudeau and Everton Weekes at Port of Spain in January 1953).
  • at 240, the pair bettered the previous best against India for the 5th wicket in an away Test match (the previous best was 239 between Australians Steve Waugh and Ricky Ponting at Adelaide in December 1999).
  • at 255, the pair bettered the previous best by any country against India for the 5th wicket (the previous best was 254 runs between Englishmen Keith Fletcher and Tony Greig at the Brabourne Stadium, Bombay in February 1973).
