Letter of the Day

November 12, 2001
South African incompetence?

Imagine if you will, a visiting team in india, lets say England, Australia or our beloved South African team. They are assigned practice matches in grounds which do not have adequate facilities to provide for match play even when there is no rain at the time of play.

What do you think the reaction would be? Hell would be raised, there would be a million complaints about our incompetence and how we are treating them shabbily.

India in South Africa have already lost out on valuable match practice in the first match, without there being any rain. the ground conditions have been atrocious and they have been unable to render the ground adequate for cricket.

They have no super soppers or good drainage facilities. now the same might happen in the second tour match, despite no rain on the first day and only light showers in the ealy morning of the first day. Why are we assigned such ridiculous venues?

Why do we have to put up with such ineptitude? Aren't we being meted out a second-class treatment? I wish the indian team would launch an official protest and make their displeasure known. we have had enough of third-world diplomacy without any such reciprocal gestures

Signed
Madhu
