Software parks exports to grow ten-fold by 2000

The Software Technology Parks of India plans to grow ten-fold in software exports to achieve a turnover of $24 billion by the turn of the century.

The STP exports have increased from Rs 7.27 billion in 1995-96 to Rs 17.8 billion in 1996-97, growing at 145 per cent. Total export earnings in these two years were Rs 25.5 billion and Rs 37 billion respectively. It expects to exceed its target export revenue of around Rs 30 billion by the end of 1997-98.

The STPI is a Department of Electronics organisation that gives concessions to software entrepreneurs wishing to export.

Export revenue of the STPI units have been showing a growth of about 100 per cent every year while the rest of the software industry rate has been at about 15 per cent.

Around 289 member STPI units have contributed to these exports. The cumulative annual growth rate of software exports under the STPI scheme over the past five years has been 155.5 per cent.
