Intel and Sun in microprocessor dealIntel Corporation and Sun Microsystems Inc have announced a royalty-free patent cross-licensing agreement covering microprocessor systems and software technologies.
According to a release from Intel, the cooperative effort will extend Sun's current success with Solaris to Intel's IA-64 Merced processor.
This is significant for customers who require an operating environment that fully leverages the performance and scalability of the Solaris operating environment on the Merced processor.
Earlier Sun and Intel announced that they are cooperating to optimise Sun's Solaris operating
Sun will deliver a 64-bit optimised version of the Solaris software for Merced in 1999 when the Merced-based system is expected to be delivered.
Under the agreement, Intel will support Sun's efforts on porting and optimising the full Solaris operating environment for Merced-based systems.
In addition, Sun has also announced a Solaris on Intel porting and tuning centre designed to help ISVs and OEMs tune and optimise applications for Solaris on Intel. As part of the programme, Intel will provide technical support, the release stated.
