Assocham calls for review of New Telecom Policy 99

Email this story to a friend. The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India has urged the government to review the National Telecom Policy 1999.

Assocham Telecom Expert Committee Chairman P K Sandell has appealed to the prime minister that the licensing terms and conditions of existing operators should be considered alterable. He argues that this will allow companies to give subscribers internationally competitive quality service.

He pointed out the entire world is moving towards convergence of technologies but NTP '99 has failed to direct the industry to take advantages of the fast-changing environment.

''It is time for the government to amend the policy and make new license conditions area-specific rather than service-specific.''

Sandell suggested inclusion of experts and neutral representatives from the industry in the policy-making institutional framework of the government.
