Is there any thing to bet here ??? May be a lame guy out there who sees nothing beyond those attractive covers Microsoft packs its products, and hears whatever Microsoft's marketing team blubber about of how great their products are, may be placing a bet. Let us just recall how many e-commerce and high trafic sites in 98 switched back from NT to Unix. But I should agree to one thing, NT has the best sales force who never miss a chance to make a false claim, after all they are paid for that and does anyone pay if you are working for Linux ??????

UNIX and then Linux would be my top two choices. Both FreeBSD and Linux are common servers used throughout the world, and hopefully India.

What do they have in common with the subject? Simple! They all run off of the same machine: This machine runs Linux. It serves about 15 domains, including web, ftp, email and interactive access (telnet) and what have you. It's 100% administrated remotely over the network....and it is a simple P100mhz with 32 megs of RAM with 99.98% availability. Get that running of on NT with the same hardware with the same uptime (not to mention for the same price) and then I'll reconsider...Until then -
Linux it is.

I can't understand why any ISP would use NT over Unix. Unix and Linux has more then proved that they are the best choice for ISP's. The past few years has been the real test for Unix internet servers. The only reason I could see using NT for even a webserver on the Internet is if you really can't find someone good enough to admin Unix.

My bet? My bet is the same as my hope: Any one of the OpenSource operating systems, be it Linux, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, or whatever. What is at stake is subtle and far reaching -- the freedom of a populace to dictate their own computing needs without prior reference to a corporate marketing agenda.

When I install Linux and Solaris machines I have to hunker down and think carefully about what I am doing but the result are machines that have minimal maintenance. I really do mean minimal, I have not touched most of the machines I put in place. The machines I have touched are for upgrade or security patches. When I install NT machines I hope that the installer program is doing what should be done. The result is a machine that mostly runs fine. Periodically the machine goes down for no visible reason after running for 30-60 days. I am in the habit of rebooting the boxes each month to cut down on the unplanned interruption of services. I am never able to forget about the boxes. We are removing the NT boxes one at a time. Linux and Solaris get equal praise from me. Both are install and relax OS. Solaris has tight hardware/software integration and SUN SUPPORT SERVICES but poor documentation of code and systems. Linux has front line strength patch updates and source but is still young in enterprise support.
In short with both Solaris and Linux I have been able to RESOLVE all issues that have come up. With NT I am forced to hope the problems go away or are patched.

This is a big question that pops up in everyone's mind as soon as they start thinking about computers, be it for home or office. Being a software professional myself, some of my observations have been influenced from personal as well as from experiences of colleagues/friends. While no one can question the ease of use, simple installation and huge volume base of Microsoft, one thing that has stuck with the company is the image that it is not a real software company doing business but a business machine also doing some software. So naturally NT is not able to enter areas of critical importance like real time applications, where reliability is the key to success. No one wants to reboot the server every other day because some application crashed bringing the OS down. While UNIX and its so called "hacker" version Linux benefit from the ills of NT, they suffer from one major drawback.... "Market presence". With the evolution of Companies like Red Hat supporting Linux its going to be a big challenge for Microsoft, as acknowleged by the Company itself, in its internal memos. So the bottom line is even though NT is ahead in terms of its market share and support, its no time to boast and be complacent. I would personally like to keep my options open in terms of choice of the platform. So it should be horses for courses... if u want some application to be reliable(most)/secure/cost effective then Linux is the whiz kid of the block.

Unix or Linux. NT is not very reliable, has lower performance and is tough to maintain remotely. Also choosing NT will furthur MS's dominance, which is not good for anybody

For ISP's, it makes sense to use Linux. Security patches are available for Linux eons before either Unix or Windows NT.
