The New Delhi high court today directed the government and cellular operators to give an undertaking that the telecom policy would be implemented only after its approval by a new Lok Sabha.

The court also directed cellular operators that if the policy is not approved by the new Lok Sabha then they would go back to the old policy and carry out their old commitments.

Attorney-General Soli Sorabji asked for some time to reply to the queries raised by the high court and suggested that he needed to consult the government for further directives.

The cellular operators also asked for time. The court will now take up the matter on August 10.

Indira Jaising, counsel for petitioner Delhi Science Forum, argued that the government is in great hurry to oblige cellular operators who have declared themselves sick.

She claimed that these cellular operators have made huge sums by selling their shares at premium. She has pointed out that at the time of honouring their financial commitments to the government, the cellular operators suddenly began pleading that they are not doing well enough and that they have made bids which are not realistic and hence they need to be bailed out from a tight corner.
