The S Jaipal Reddy ChatOn a night when the United Front government was on the verge of collapse, UF spokesmanS Jaipal Reddy took two hours off from the hurly-burly of politics to appear on the Rediff Chat and keep readers informed of the political events convulsing the country. A most enlightening discussion from the eloquent and erudite Janata Dal politician. Check out the transcript.Dr. Sharma (Thu Apr 10 20:46:05 1997 IST):
Mr Reddy
Your Janta Dal is full of corrupt politicians. The present political situation has resulted from one set of corrupt politicians trying to throw light on the other set of corrupt politicians. Why are you crying fowl?
Ajit Pillai (Thu Apr 10 20:48:28 1997 IST):
Mr: What scenario do you foresee if the United Front is voted out of power tomorrow? Sonia Suman Dev (Thu Apr 10 20:52:29 1997 IST):
Mr Reddy: Don't you think the crisis could have been amicably settled if Deve Gowda stepped down? Suri (Thu Apr 10 20:57:12 1997 IST):
Sir, What do you think is going to happen on the 11th?
Nikhil Lakshman (Thu Apr 10 20:58:56 1997 IST):
Good evening, Mr Reddy. It is wonderful to have with
you this evening. We appreciate your making time
for us at this crucial hour. A N Donald (Thu Apr 10 21:00:23 1997 IST):
Why, Mr Reddy, was the Congress so adamant
about changing Deve Gowda? What has the PM done to
upset Mr Kesri? S JAIPAL REDDY (Thu Apr 10 21:00:32 1997 IST):
EVERYONE: Hello, everyone. It gives me great pleasure to interact with you on the current political situation which is exciting in a way and at the same time pregnant with tremendous significance for the future. I am ready for your questions. L L James (Thu Apr 10 21:01:09 1997 IST):
Hullo, Sir. I have long been ad admirer of your grit.
And your eloquence. Is there no way out
than a mid-term poll? ravi (Thu Apr 10 21:01:33 1997 IST):
Good evening Mr. Reddy
I believe post election alliances should not be recognised only pre-election
alliances should. Post election alliances are a violation of the peoples
mandate. It encourages power brokering. Situations such as the present crisis
can be avoided. Your comments Sir ..
Suri (Thu Apr 10 21:01:36 1997 IST):
Dear Mr Reddy What do you think is going to happen on the 11th?
S B Chaturvedi (Thu Apr 10 21:02:59 1997 IST):
Namashkar, Jaipalji. Is it true that
Mr Kesri was going to be arrested
on April 4, and is that why the Congress
withdrew support? Will you tell the nation what
really happened tomorrow? A N Donald (Thu Apr 10 21:04:26 1997 IST):
Mr Reddy, Ghulam Nabi Azad says that despite the CWC
resolutions none of the UF leaders
bothered to meet with Cong leaders. Is this
true? Why did you take the Congress support for granted? S JAIPAL REDDY (Thu Apr 10 21:05:11 1997 IST):
Dr Sharma: Though you have mentioned the JD in particular, you seem to be cynical about politicians of all parties from the kind of question you have framed. Politicians are bad, but the tragedy is that the others are no better. However bad they are, they are unavoidable in a democracy. So you need to learn to deal with them and live with them. L L James (Thu Apr 10 21:06:20 1997 IST):
Is there still hope for a compromise? And will the
UF recommend a mid-term poll? Or is that just pressure
tactics? Suri (Thu Apr 10 21:07:07 1997 IST):
MR REDDY WHAT WILL HAPPEN TOMORROW????????PLEASE ANSWER MY QUESTION SIR WHAT WILL HAPPEN TOMORROW? ABU Hassan (Thu Apr 10 21:07:16 1997 IST):
What are the chances of a national government?
Can the President compel a national government to be formed? NANDINI (Thu Apr 10 21:07:29 1997 IST):
Namaskar Jaipaljee! Hope you are in full form this splendid night and is going to give us some frank answers. Could you tell us how Deve Gowda has taken Kesri's punch? Badly or well? C'mon now..! ravi (Thu Apr 10 21:08:08 1997 IST):
Mr. Reddy can you give us a birds eye view of these
"talks" your teams have been having with the CongressI ? ravi (Thu Apr 10 21:09:27 1997 IST):
Good evening Mr. Reddy I believe post election alliances should not be recognised
only pre-election alliances should. Post election alliances are a violation of the peoples
mandate. It encourages power brokering. Situations such as the present crisis can be
avoided. Your comments Sir .. Suri (Thu Apr 10 21:10:47 1997 IST):
Mr Reddy, do you think that Mr Gowda will be able to prove a majority tomorrow?
NANDINI (Thu Apr 10 21:10:48 1997 IST):
This one is out of sheer curiosity: Suppose, L K Advanis comes on his kness and tells you, 'hi uf guys, i am your great admirer. Would you mind forming a government with our support?' what will be the UF's answer? I mean, we have heard about the deparete-ness Deve Gowda is showing... so would you guys go along? S JAIPAL REDDY (Thu Apr 10 21:11:17 1997 IST):
A N Donald: The charge of Mr Azad is unwarranted and unfounded. Mr Gowda met Mr Kesri 12 times in the last three months, apart from innumerable telephonic talks. Mr Deve Gowda has been most accessible to all politicians more particularly those of the Congress. The charge, I must add, is just a pretext to grab power and nothing else. NANDINI (Thu Apr 10 21:11:46 1997 IST):
Hey jaipalji... all questions and no answers... doesn't it make you feel dull? ravi (Thu Apr 10 21:12:47 1997 IST):
Mr Reddy-- I have always wondered. The UF expects
the Congress to support but when the shoe is on the other
foot and the Congress expects your support, your Anti-Congressism kicks in
and you say no way. It seems highly hypocritical to me especially
when you claim to both want to have anti-communal forces at bay ? Comment please .. Suri (Thu Apr 10 21:12:50 1997 IST):
Dear Mr Reddy ,
All the parties are taking the country for a long jolly ride, without bothering about the people. Who is
leading this ride, cannot be said because the ride is going in circles. I think each and every Indian
should feel ashamed of having such a bunch of politicians. Almost everyone seem to be involved in
some scam or other. If only we could recover the alleged scam(s) monies from those responsible then
we would wipe out all our deficits. NANDINI (Thu Apr 10 21:12:56 1997 IST):
Okay, okay, I take it back! Mr Reddy is not a dull boy. He IS answering questions! S JAIPAL REDDY (Thu Apr 10 21:14:25 1997 IST):
LL JAMES: There is always hope in politics. A lot can happen between now and the vote in the Lok Sabha tomorrow. While this is true theoretically, I must inform you that the talks with the Congress have finally failed. allegheri (Thu Apr 10 21:14:51 1997 IST):
Why cannot you remove Deve Gowda. Wasn't he the
same one who used to hobnob with Narasimha Rao.
Do you think Kesri can support someone who stands
by his current enemy? NANDINI (Thu Apr 10 21:15:05 1997 IST):
Is it true that some of the coalition partners were ready to ditch Deve Gowda and go for another leader? A N Donald (Thu Apr 10 21:16:49 1997 IST):
Thank you, Sir. Do you think the BJP will
abstain from the vote, in the national
interest? ranjeet (Thu Apr 10 21:16:50 1997 IST):
hello Mr. Jaipal reddy,
Now that the tals between Congrss (I) & U.F have
failed do u think that India is heading towards
midterm polls Suri (Thu Apr 10 21:16:53 1997 IST):
MR REDDY WHY HAVE TO TALKS BTWEEN YOU AND THE CONGRESS FAILED? WHAT HAPPENED IN YOUR DISCUSSIONS? WHY DID THEY FAIL? WHAT WILL HAPPEN NOW? L L James (Thu Apr 10 21:17:42 1997 IST):
Thank you, sir. Why does Mr Kesri despise Mr
Deve Gowda so much? Don't you think this is
a personal clash? The PM also
irritated Mr kesri by giving too much importance to
Mr Rao? Prakash abad (Thu Apr 10 21:18:46 1997 IST):
What do you think are the chances of a mid-term poll? S B Chaturvedi (Thu Apr 10 21:19:08 1997 IST):
Mr Reddy, why did the Front leaders
not take care to ensure that the prime minister
did not embark on a Hassan-like vengeance
trail? Priya (Thu Apr 10 21:19:20 1997 IST):
Dear Mr Reddy, Mr Kesri seems almost vindictive in his demand that Mr Deve Gowda resign.
What has Mr Deve Gowda doen to deserve this? Is it the Tanwar case which you brought to his
notice? S JAIPAL REDDY (Thu Apr 10 21:19:44 1997 IST):
Abu Hassan: The chances of a national government during the current phase of Indian politics are nil. There are two good reasons for this situation. One is, the BJP through its Hindu chauvnism has become a political untouchable. Secondly, generally national governments are formed only during war. As was done during the second world war in Great Britain. ABU Hassan (Thu Apr 10 21:20:05 1997 IST):
If Mr Kesri so insisted on Mr DG's removal, the PM
must have done something to upset him. What was it? L L James (Thu Apr 10 21:20:39 1997 IST):
Mr Surjeet says the Congress made several attempts to
break the Front. Could you shed some light on this sir? ABU Hassan (Thu Apr 10 21:21:31 1997 IST):
Thank you, Mr Reddy. But are we not
facing a similar crisis in India?
What about the Budget? Will it be passed
tomorrow? Or are the proposals null and void? Lata (Thu Apr 10 21:21:49 1997 IST):
SIR WHAT WILL HAPPEN TOMORRROW? Dr. Sharma (Thu Apr 10 21:21:54 1997 IST):
Mr. Reddy:
I got you response. You misinterpreted my question. It is not all politicians. It is the JD and Congress that I alluded to. By saying that "others are equally bad so bad politicians should be acceptable", you are giving me thoughts that are frightening to any proud Indian. You are comparing yourself with millions of decent honest Indians and I am one of them. You wrote that even bad politicians are unavoidable in a democracy. You are wrong. Democracy is a recycling process and people like Lalloo, Mulayam, Kesari, Sharad, can be sent for compost formation. Do not misrepesent the issue. akash (Thu Apr 10 21:21:58 1997 IST):
Mr Reddy, I am Akash, from London. Tell me, do you still want to be suppported by a lousy and untrustworthy Congress. Why not call their bluff and hold elections. Then India can truly have two parties when the Congress is finished. ravi (Thu Apr 10 21:22:05 1997 IST):
Mr. Reddy, Do you think a conscience vote can save you ?
Should the Congress choose not to issue a whip do you have
a chance ?( I know it's not possible, just curious to hear
your reaction as to whether you think the MP's are standing by Kesri or not) Kishore (Thu Apr 10 21:22:08 1997 IST):
WHY DID THE TALKS FAIL MR REDDY WHY DID THE TALKS FAIL? Deepak Agrawal (Thu Apr 10 21:22:15 1997 IST):
Mr. Reddy, what is your prediction for political situation at the
Center for next 12 months? I would like you to put
forth a most likley scenario and not the most desirable one from your
standpoint. Thank you. ranjeet (Thu Apr 10 21:23:05 1997 IST):
Mr reddy,
How do u think you will face the vote of confidence
after the talk failue is there a way for u to win it? Urgent (Thu Apr 10 21:23:30 1997 IST):
Mr. Reddy, If the BJP decides to support the motion tomorrow only to push thru the budget and the Finance Bill, in the interest of the poeple, they will score a political point. In this situation, will you accept their support? God (Thu Apr 10 21:23:33 1997 IST):
Mr Jaipal Reddy, could you tell me why the UF is not ready for a change in leadership as the Congress wants? Don't you think, in the larger interest of the country, you should give way to them? Is winning over the Congress and showing them what men-of-words you guys are more important than the interests of the country? allegheri (Thu Apr 10 21:24:08 1997 IST):
The BJP may be a political untouchable. But it
is doing fine with the electorate. Maybe the
populace is easily swayed by rhetoric but isn't
all this talk about "keeping out communalism"
ringing false now. "the lady doth protest too much
kind of thing? Lata (Thu Apr 10 21:25:11 1997 IST):
MR REDDY: I feel the nation's concern is more important than petty politics. Today we hear that the
petrol bunks are closed due to the lorry strike. There is no one to take a decision at the Centre. For
the country's sake either support Gowda or ask for a non-BJP govt headed by veterans like Mr.
Moopanar or Mr. Basu. Mr. Kesri has little respect in Tamil Nadu. He visited Jayalalitha more often
than any other leader and the worst is that he made it to the infamous Jayalalitha's foster son's
marriage. We Tamils have voted for secularism and given a clear mandate. We do not want to face
another election as it is going to affect the economy now. Do something. Please save India. As a true
follower of Gandhian principles please for heaven's sake stop petty politics. Do reply.
