Questions Geeta Mukherjee did not answer

Anil (Tue Jul 14 1998 8:9 IST)
Ms Mukherjee: I find it very unfair. Our country was divided on religion in 1947. Then the Mandal movement led to the hatred between two communities. Do you think, it is sensible to quarrel now between opposite sexes. After all, if a women is meritorious in her social work. People will surely vote for her. Be it a reserved constituency or not. I am sure you must be one of them, isn't it? So, why bring the reservation policy?

Sapna (Tue Jul 14 1998 8:12 IST)
Ms Mukherjee: One personal question. Does your spouse involve himself in your day to day political activity??

sainarasimhan (Tue Jul 14 1998 8:12 IST)
Geetaji: How about the mechanics of the reservation? Will certain constituencies be reserved only for women candidates? Or will each party HAVE to denominate 1/3 of the seats it is competing for as Women's seats? Or will a party not be allowed to have more than 2/3 of its seats (after the elections) with men? This part is a little confusing. Could you please elaborate?

Amit (Tue Jul 14 1998 8:13 IST)
Ms Mukherjee: Your party was associated with Laloo and Mulayam. Do you think they have MCP charactersitics?

Amit (Tue Jul 14 1998 8:16 IST)
Ms Mukherjee: Except Bhagawati Devi, the ex-MP of Rashtriya Janata Dal. Can you give me seven other names of women who were from lower strata. I am sure you won't be able to answer my question.

sen (Tue Jul 14 1998 8:20 IST)
Geetaji: (a) What is your feeling on the status of the bill. (b) Is the OBC Question is a back-ddor way to kill the bill ? If yes, what are you doing about it ?

Ilawarsi (Tue Jul 14 1998 8:24 IST)
Geetaji, please accept my condolences over the death of the Eightyfourth Amendment Bill -- I use the word 'death' because after today's turnabout by teh Congress party, I do not see the bill in its present form being introduced. Do you?

Ilawarsi (Tue Jul 14 1998 8:25 IST)
Amit, I resent your question and join issues with you... when women themselves constitute a minority, how can you further divide them into OBCs etc? Or is it your contention that women have reached the pinnacle in India...?

sainarasimhan (Tue Jul 14 1998 8:26 IST)
Geetaji: (repeat Q) Is there REALLY a need for RESERVATION? Couldn't this be accomplished by other means? Like adult education, and spreading the message through political parties? I am a firm believer that reservation can only go so far. After all, reservation for SCs etc. since independence has NOT brought them as much in terms of economic independence as it was initially thought it would. Also witness the failure of the 'reservations' policy in the US (known locally as affirmative action). [Please don't misconstrue my comments as that of a MCP. I am NOT against women. I believe strongly in the empowerment of women.] Comments?

Amit (Tue Jul 14 1998 8:28 IST)
Ms Mukherjee: Have you disappeared like the women's bill?????

sainarasimhan (Tue Jul 14 1998 8:29 IST)
Amit ... probably a long answer in the process of being typed!!

Ilawarsi (Tue Jul 14 1998 8:29 IST)
Geetaji, where are you????

Manoj (Tue Jul 14 1998 8:31 IST)
Ms Mukherjee: Why women has become a commodity today in market economy. Can you explain why a little exposure of Indian film actresses give them big hits. I think it is not good for me to mention the names...

sen (Tue Jul 14 1998 8:34 IST)
Sainarasimhan, the point is "impetus". By making 1/3 of the MPs as women, an impetus of women emacipation is provided. Job reservations/affirmative action supports you initially (which is right) and all thro' your carrear (which is wrong). In the 1/3 reservation, we are "attempting to" bring a paradigm shift in the parliament itself?

sen (Tue Jul 14 1998 8:35 IST)
What is the latest position of the Congress ? (I'm on the other side of the globe and are not quite up-to-date)

mahesh (Tue Jul 14 1998 8:40 IST)
Saisuresh sivaswamy, this is the dilliwalla.Sorry to use this forum. Could you please send me your e-mail address later? Also please ask js sai to do the same.Cheers.

sainarasimhan (Tue Jul 14 1998 8:40 IST)
Geetaji: Thank you for answering my previous question. How about tackling this lack of eomen representation in another way? i) Why not start with a Women's party? ii) How about forcing ALL political parties to have Women's factions? Then the nominations can proceed along party lines with reservations being enforced by the individual parties. Maybe the EC could help in ensuring compliance. iii) We could make the EC choose the 1/3 strongest showing women (as a % of the local votes polled) and 'elect' them. That way no man or party can be sure that his seat is safe!! Any thoughts?

Manoj (Tue Jul 14 1998 8:44 IST)
Ms Mukherjee: When women can compete in jobs. Why can't they compete in politics. AFter all, they are never asking reservation in jobs, why is it so??

sainarasimhan (Tue Jul 14 1998 8:45 IST)
mahesh .. here is sai's address sssai@rediff.co.in ... me not Saisuresh .. in case you thought so!

Sapna (Tue Jul 14 1998 8:46 IST)
Ms Mukherjee: Why don't women start a suffragette movement in India like it happened in US. I mean, is the 21st Indian women the same bholi bhali si types???

sainarasimhan (Tue Jul 14 1998 8:47 IST)

Manoj (Tue Jul 14 1998 8:50 IST)
Ms Mukherjee: Considering that women are one of the major vote blocs in India. Why don't they go out and vote for a women candidate rather than voting for different parties.. can you explain?

Ilawarsi (Tue Jul 14 1998 8:51 IST)
Sainarasimhan and Mahesh: As Saisuresh's friend, let me provide his new email address which has now changed: it is sais@rediff.co.in...

Sapna (Tue Jul 14 1998 8:53 IST)
Ms Mukherjee: There is a great difference between you and Shabana. Whevever, I had seen you in television. You were dressed in Cotton sarees. Moreover, you are the real worker unlike that stupid actress who is good for nothing but except making noise. I am amazed that you are defending a person who was responsible for separating Javed Akhtar from his wife. And then she comes out and talks about women's right. Isn't it hypocrisy folks. I am sure you won't reply to my qeustion..

sainarasimhan (Tue Jul 14 1998 8:54 IST)
Ilawarsi .. Thanks! But that is the e-mail address that he wrote to me from .. will update my book!
