Here's a look at some interesting celebrity ads

Last updated on: July 25, 2011 08:27 IST

We share their joys, their sorrow, their pain, their success, and even their loss. Simply put, sometimes we love them, sometimes we hate them, but whatever we do we just can't ignore them.

So, when they come knocking on our drawing rooms endorsing a product, we notice them, hear them and sometimes, even consider their choice.

For advertisers, using a celebrity is almost like cashing on a brilliant idea. Though, many a time, it feels like advertisers work on the mantra: if you don't have an idea, use a celebrity.

But, in some cases, they do have a winner. Here, we present some of the best celebrity ads of the decade that have managed to win our hearts and successfully managed to sell the product.

Aishwarya Rai: Lakme

Well, we know this ad is slightly older than a decade. In fact, it was shortly done after Aishwarya Rai won her Miss World Title. Released in 1994, this Lakme commercial is one of the most stylishly shot TVCs in India, and it seamlessly blends the celebrity and the product.

The face of Lakme for a long time, Aishwarya epitomises beauty in this commercial. Following this advertisement, both Lakme and Aishwarya took the industry by storm.

It is assumed that this ad sort of broke the celebrity-ad irrelevance status. That's why we just couldn't ignore it.

Aamir Khan: Coca-Cola

Okay, so we know that Aamir Khan is a perfectionist, a good actor and he can also make an ad come alive. And, his Coca-Cola commercials were a clear testimony to that.

However, Aamir Khan wasn't the only thing good about the ad. McCann, the agency behind the ad, set a good example of how one can convincingly use a celebrity and drive home a message.

All, we can say is 'brilliant!'

Aamir Khan: Titan

We've already said what we have to say about Aamir. So, it's not a big surprise that all the Titan commercials with Aamir Khan are simply amazing.

Even the latest Titan ad inspired by Lord of the Rings' Galadriel's vial of light, beautifully talks about the HTSE (High Tech Self Energised) technology, which features watches that can be charged by any light source.

Aamir Khan communicates this message seamlessly. Also, the ad is beautifully shot and the background music 'If I go Mad because I can't stop thinking about you' suits the mood perfectly well.

R Madhavan-Vidya Balan: Airtel

This pair did bring home the magic with their wonerful chemistry. And, this smirk-inducing commercial was instantly appreciated by the audience.

But, Airtel almost lost its plot with over exposure of the ad. Loveable and cute at first, the mush was too much to handle when the ad appeared almost every half hour on TV and across all channels.

However, the telecom major managed to save the magic and quickly replaced the couple with the real-life pair: Saif and Kareena. It, also, managed to win positive feedback, though not exactly the same as that of Vidya-Madhavan.

So, overkill or not, this commercial did use the celebrity pair wisely and was successful in driving home the message.

Abhishek Bachchan: Idea

Abhishek has played multiple roles for Idea Cellular ads - starting from a village sarpanch, priest, travel guide, and a tree. Each TVC has carries a social message and in turn promotes value-added services from Idea.

And, these ads were widely appreciated. In fact, if the advertising industry had a box-office showcase for a commercial, these ads would definitely be considered as blockbusters.

Likewise, when we a see hit movie and wait eagerly for its sequel, and more often than not are disappointed with part 2, Idea's latest 3G ads somewhat fall into this category.

However, we still stand by our opinion that earlier Idea ads showcased some good creative work.

Deepika Padukone - Purab Kholi - Karan Johar: Nescafe

This is a nicely woven story of a star-struck boy (Purab Kholi) who is excited and trying out every trick in the book to impress his celebrity neighbour (Deepika Padukone).

Though, this boy manages to make friends with his star neighbour, he still hasn't managed to impress her enough. As the plot thickens, enters the third character Karan Johar, the director.

Here, even though Purab is mighty thrilled to be around the stars he tires to act cool. In fact, his "cool" attitude lends a nice punch to the ad.

Launched as a teaser campaign, followed by the real story in three parts, we are now waiting to see how the plot progresses further. Or, is the end to the story, we wonder?

For now, our verdict: Despite the celebrity parade, advertisers manage to make a beautiful connect with the brand, which generates high recall value.

Aamir Khan - Gul Panang:  Tata Sky

Aamir Khan and Gul Panag came together in a series of Tata Sky ads to promote the new Tata Sky Plus and its features. Every ad in this series was beautifully shot, and managed to hold audience interest successfully.

In fact, we can confidently say that it is one of those television commercial sequels that managed to communicate a fresh idea while being as good as the original.

Even the follow-up commercials picked up the right elements same cast, same sets, and the I-will-do-anything-for-a-match hubby in action - but with a completely new angle in the story.

Further, Aamir's sincerity in playing the mischievous hubby's character is what works wonders for this ad and his chemistry with Gul just makes it better.

Juhi Chawla: Kurkure

Juhi Chawla is associated with Kurkure since 2004. And, since then she has tried to tickle some funny bones.

The agency, too, has successfully portrayed Juhi in various characters, without compromising on the theme. They have beautifully used her strong points like her cheerful personality, her amazing sense of comic timing and her home girl image.

We can say that Juhi and Kurkure make a perfect pair kya match hain!

Ranbir Kapoor: Pepsi

This ad glorifies the youth and the fact that today they do not leave anything up to chance.

Ranbir, who pretends to play a gay lover to save his friend from an arranged marriage set-up, portrays the character with ease. He, of course, represents the 'Youngistan', who are known to take charge of their own lives and not live by the norms the society has set for them.

After Wake Up Sid, we can safely say that Pepsi couldn't have found a better ambassador.

Imran Khan: Coca-Cola

The little use of shadow playing makes this ad an interesting watch. Although, tt doesn't rely too heavily on the celebrity status, it yet tires to connect with the audience.

The idea behind this ad was to create a strong emotional connect with today's youth by highlighting the need to connect with the people around us in our busy cosmopolitan lives.

Imran plays his part of the boy-next-door character quite well. Over all, it's a nice attempt.
