The Sensex opened with a marginal positive gap of 34 points at 10,105, but soon slipped in red to a low of 10,011. The index, thereafter, exhibited high volatility till mid-noon deals.
Heavy buying towards the close saw the index zoomed to a high of 10,477 - up 466 points from the day's low. The index finally settled with a gain of 380 points at 10,451.
The Nifty gained 129 points to close at 3,091.
The BSE Metal index surged 4.8% to 8,573, and the auto index rallied 4.2% to 4,774. The FMCG index gained almost 4% at 1,895, and the Oil & Gas index was up 3.5% at 5,081.
Reflecting the weak market breadth, the Mid-cap index slipped 0.8% to 4,873, and the Small-cap index dropped 2.5% to 5,986.
The market breadth was extremely negative - out of 2,457 stocks traded, 1,804 declined, 609 advanced and 44 were unmoved today.
Index Movers & Shakers
Maruti zoomed nearly 13% to Rs 769. Tata Motors rallied 6.5% to Rs 789. Hero Honda gained 4.5% at Rs 762, and Bajaj Auto added 4% to Rs 2,718.
While HLL soared over 8% to Rs 242, ITC moved up 2.7% to Rs 164.
Hindalco zoomed 8% to Rs 180, and Tata Steel surged 6% to Rs 518.
ONGC surged 4.7% to Rs 1,126, and Reliance added 3.5% to Rs 957.
Wipro advanced 5.8% to Rs 470, and TCS rallied 4.5% to Rs 1,788. Satyam and Infosys were up around 2% each at Rs 668 adn Rs 2,886,
