The Sensex on Monday opened with a gain of 28 points at 4,784. The index displayed a range-bound trend till early noon deals.
Fresh buying emerged in mid-noon trades and the markets saw a huge spurt towards the closing hours. A sharp rally in heavyweight, PSU, tech, pharma and other select old economy stocks lifted the index to an intra-day high of 4,845.
The Sensex closed with a gain of 1.71% or 81 points at 4,837. The Nifty breached the 1,500-mark to end at 1,514 - up 26 points.
While 25 Sensex stocks advanced, five declined today.
Heavyweight, PSU and tech pivotals propelled the gains of the index.
Reliance advanced 2.32% (Rs 10) to Rs 442. While ITC was up a per cent (Rs 7) at Rs 872, HLL closed down a tad at Rs 128.
SBI flared up 3.31% (Rs 14) to Rs 433. HPCL logged nearly 3% gains (Rs 9) to Rs 322. MTNL jumped 3% (Rs 4) to Rs 125. BHEL was up 1.25% (Rs 6) at Rs 501. ONGC, however, was down Rs 3 at Rs 631.
Infosys attracted considerable buying support, and surged 2.21% (Rs 121) to close at Rs 5,599. Wipro firmed up 4.52% (Rs 24) to Rs 556. Satyam mopped up 2.80% gains (Rs 9) to Rs 316.
Cipla soared 6.10% (Rs 12) to Rs 215. Dr. Reddy's added 2.79% (Rs 20) to Rs 744. Ranbaxy was up nearly 2% (Rs 18) at Rs 921.
Grasim advanced 2.33% (Rs 22) to Rs 966. While Gujarat Ambuja gained 2.42% (Rs 7) to Rs 281, ACC moved up 2.49% (Rs 6) to Rs 241.
Hindalco notched up 5% gains (Rs 49) to Rs 1,020. Bharti was up 2.85% (Rs 4) at Rs 137. While Tisco clocked 2.37% gains (Rs 7) to Rs 303, Tata Power moved up 2.73% (Rs 6) to Rs 235. Zee was up 2.69% (Rs 3) at Rs 124.
Maruti gained 1.80% (Rs 7) to Rs 392. Bajaj added 1.17% (Rs 10) to Rs 900. Tata Motors was up 1.15% (Rs 4) at Rs 384. Hero Honda, however, lost 1.52% (Rs 7) to Rs 486.
HDFC, however, ended weak with a loss of 1.57% (Rs 9) at Rs 543.
