Scrap MAT, urges Assocham

February 11, 2005 14:48 IST
Industry body Assocham has sought elimination of Minimum Alternate Tax saying that it was coming in the way of growth of companies and inflow of foreign capital.

"MAT has added several problems in assessment of companies and generated inefficiencies, distortions and inadequacies in to the system," Assocham President Mahendra K Sanghi said in a representation to the Finance Minister.

MAT was introduced to tax companies, which distribute dividends but do not pay income tax.

"The finance ministry has deleted cumbersome clauses related to MAT, intending to simply it but it has proved of no avail and therefore it should be scrapped," Sanghi said.
