The National Capital Region authorities today started registration for Maruti Omni after Maruti Udyog Limited-manufactured van became Euro-II compliant.

With the Omni becoming an environment-friendly vehicle, its price in the NCR would be Rs 7,000 higher than the one without the Euro II tag sold in other parts of the country.

The new model would come for Rs 190,000 in Delhi. However, buyers outside the NCR region would have the option of choosing either of the models -- with or without Euro II compliance.

MUL spokesman said that the Omni, which accounts for 20 per cent of the company's total sales, is the second vehicle after the Zen to become Euro II compliant.

Maruti 800, the largest selling car, continues to be Euro-I compliant. The company is hopeful of meeting the Supreme Court deadline of April 2000. ''We will make Maruti 800 Euro II compliant even before the deadline,'' he said.

He said the company achieved 30 per cent growth in the sales of the Omni in April-October,1999 despite the fact that the van was not selling in the NCR region. Now that its sales in this region have been opened, the company is expecting at least 25 per cent jump in the Omni sales over and above its growth in other parts of the country, he said.

Out of a total vehicle sales of 302,952 last year, the Omni accounted for 58,825. However, this year, without selling in the NCR area, the company has sold 46,746 vehicles in the first seven months of the current financial year.
