The Delhi government has permitted unrestricted registration of the 999cc Hyundai Santro within the National Capital Region or NCR since the car conforms to the India Year 2000 norms.

The state government, in a circular issued on May 24, stated that since Santro Standard and Santro GLS comply with the India Year 2000 norms, the cars should be allowed unrestricted registration of private non-commercial vehicles.

Hyundai Motor India Limited had furnished all the relevant documents, along with the supporting test figures of Automotive Research Association of India certifying emission levels of Santro much within the India 2000 specifications, to the Delhi Transport Commissioner's office last week, an official spokesperson said.

Besides, Daewoo Motors India Limited, Telco, Honda-Siel and Ford India have also been permitted to register their Euro-I compliant cars.

The vehicles identified by the transport department as compliant with the Euro I or II norms were Matiz, Cielo, Nexia, Tata Sumo, Tata Sumo DX, Tata Indica LE, LX, Ford Escort, Honda Siel Exi, LXI, Hindustan Trekker, Lancer GLXI, Fiat Uno 1.7 DX, Bajaj Tempo Trax, Mahindra and Mahindra CDR 750 DP, Opel Astra diesel fitted with catalytic converter and Mercedes Benz E 200, E 230, E 250 cars.

Meanwhile, registration of a limited number of non-Euro-I compliant vehicles, as allowed by the Supreme Court, will be carried out till May-end.

Hyundai Motor India has already effected a Rs 12,000 hike in ex-showroom prices of the Euro-ii compliant versions of Santro.

The car will be available as an additional option for each of Santro's three variants. The prices of the existing versions would remain unchanged. The Euro-II compliant cars would hit the streets in the NCR by the month-end.

The Santro is available in three versions with the base model priced at Rs 299,000 (ex-showroom Delhi), Santro DX with power windows and central door locking at Rs 349,000 and Santro DX with power steering at Rs 369,000.

Besides, all future products of Hyundai, including the next offering code-named 'LC', will meet the Euro-II emission norms from the time of their launch in the country.
