Bajaj Auto to revamp vendor base; four new models, eco-friendly vehicles planned

Bajaj Auto Limited has embarked on an exercise -- ''Project Scorpio'' -- to revamp its existing vendor base even as four new models are being readied for launch during the 1999-2000 fiscal.

The new products to be launched during the year include a four-stroke scooter (the Saffire), a 125cc motorcycle (the Prowler) and four-stroke versions of the M-80 and the three-wheeler.

Upgradation of M-80 with four-stroke engine and improved styling and four-stroke three-wheeler is in the final stage of development and will meet the year 2000 emission norms.

Besides, three-wheelers that run on compressed natural gas fuel are under development.

The company further stated that its Legend scooter and Japanese motorcycles already meet the year 2000 norms. Other scooters and M-80 will meet the norms with catalytic convertors.

Project Scorpio, it said, involves identification of core component categories requiring partnerships with suppliers through continuous joint process improvement programmes for quality improvement, technology upgradation and cost reduction.

''The project was started in November 1998 to initiate transformation over the next two to three years,'' the company said in a statement.
