Auto emission order: Special bench may consider Centre's plea for modification

Email this report to a friend

The Supreme Court today indicated that it might consider this week an application to be filed by the Centre seeking a modification of its order for introduction of Euro I and II emission norms for registration of private non-commercial vehicles in the National Capital Region.

The indication came from a three-judge bench comprising Chief Justice A S Anand, Justice M J Rao and Justice Santosh N Hegde, when additional solicitor general Kirip N Raval urged the court to find some time to deal with this pressing matter.

Raval submitted that the government did not want to contest the basic thrust of the April 29 order, but needed certain clarifications for working out the modalities involved in implementing the order.

The Chief Justice observed that the court was hard pressed for time as it was the last week before the summer vacation but said he would explore the possibility of constituting a special bench to deal with the matter.

The Chief Justice asked Raval to mention before him the matter again on Wednesday.

It is learnt that the Union government is likely to file the application seeking modification of the April 29 order by May 11.
