Nifty rises 22.10 points

Pivotals gained sharply on the National Stock Exchange today following good buying support from institutional investors and local operators.

Reflecting the trend, the NSE-50 (Nifty) index opened at 941.40 points, touched the day's high of 965.30, a low of the opening level, 941.40, and finally closed at 963.45 points, netting a smart gain of 22.10 points over the previous close of 941.35 points.

The Dollar NSE-50 index opened at 841.25, touched the day's high of 862.60 points, day's low of 841.25 and settled down at 860.95 points, showing a net gain of 20.95 points as against the previous close of 840.00 points.

The Midcap index closed higher by 21.05 points to 1106.30 points against the previous close of 1085.25 points.

The total turnover reported during the day was Rs 10.6 billion. ITC continued its top position by registering highest business volume of Rs 2.9 billion, followed by Tata Tea Rs 1.7 billion, State Bank Rs 1.1 billion, Castrol Rs 1 billion and Reliance Rs 907.4 million.

The Bombay Stock Exchange today remained closed on account of the Eid-ul-Fitr holiday. The banks too were closed, and therefore the forex market was closed.

Hectic activity was observed at the other counters like Hind Lever Rs 630.3 million, MTNL Rs 333.5 million, ACC Rs 232.5 million, TISCO Rs 196.3 million, TELCO Rs 158.4 million, Corp Bank Rs 137.5 million, Bajaj Auto Rs 131.2 million, L and T Rs 88.9 million, LML Rs 88.2 million, BHEL Rs 82.7 million, ICICI Rs 46.9 million, BPL Rs 39.3 million, Indus Bank Rs 38.5 million, VSNL Rs 34.3 million, Glaxo Rs 30 million, BSES Rs 28.4 million, Colgate Rs 27.7 million, Bank of Baroda Rs 26.5 million, Hero Honda Rs 26.1 million, M and M Rs 23.7 million.

Guj Ambuja Cement, Hind Lever, MTNL, Tata Tea and Glaxo were the top gainers while IndoGulf, BPCL, Grasim, ABB, EI Hotel were the top losers.
