Finally, the Sensex rises, but only by 14.81 points

Equities at the Bombay Stock Exchange staged a modest rally, encouraged by fresh buying by foreign institutional investors and favourable trends from markets in East Asia and the United States.

The BSE-30 index (Sensex) ended 14.81 points higher at 3224.36 points as against the previous close of 3209.55 points. The rupee's stability against the American dollar aided the upward sentiment of the Sensex.

Marketmen opined that the rupee's rise against the American greenback following the RBI's stringent measures to tighten liquidity has encouraged FIIs to buy in the market.

Other factors attributed to today's rise were the Dow Jones industrial average rising 100 points and South Korea reaching an agreement with international bankers on rescheduling its short-term debt.

Marketmen avert that both factors augur well for the Southeast and East Asian region, contributing favourably to the uptrend at the country's premier bourse.

Reflecting the better phase, the BSE Sensex opened at 3204.10, touched the day's high of 3230.65 and a low of 3164.66, and finally closed at 3224.36 points, netting a gain of 14.81 points over yesterday's close of 3209.55 points.

Meanwhile, the BSE-100 index decreased further by 0.27 to 1401.38 over yesterday's close of 1401.65 points. Similarly, the BSE-200 and Dollex indices also slid by 0.50 and 0.94 to 313.63 and 134.17 points respectively.

The total turnover on the BSE reported during the day was Rs 7.9 billion.

Tobacco giant ITC was again reported on the top of the turnover list registering the highest turnover of Rs 1.8 billion, followed by Castrol Rs 1.3 billion, SBI Rs 939.2 million, Tata Tea Rs 733.2 million, Reliance Rs 444.2 million, Hind Lever Rs 216 million, Bajaj Auto Rs 194.6 million, MTNL Rs 157 million and TELCO Rs 142.7 million.

Hectic activity was witnessed at other counters like ACC Rs 139.2 million, GE Shipping Rs 107.7 million, TISCO Rs 101.4 million, BHEL Rs 98.7 million, Larsen and Toubro Rs 74.1 million and ICICI Rs 56 million.

Active trading was even reported at the B1 counters like Corporation, Kesoram, LML, Bank of Baroda, Philips(I), TVS Suzuki, Astra Idi, Videsh Sanchar, ITC Hotel, NIIT, Reliance Pet, Wipro and Aptech.
