Hope and Despair

'My daughter was born all over again'

December 3, 2007

For Lakshmi's parents, Shambu and Poonam, it was a moment they will never forget. Poonam said her child had got another life, thanks to the doctors and God.

"At our village, they wanted to take Lakshmi away to a circus; we were even offered money on a monthly basis. However, we refused all such offers as our child was important to us," she says. Shambu was overwhelmed on hearing Lakshmi's cries after the operation. "I felt my daughter was born all over again," he said.

Following the operation, Lakshmi was kept under observation in the ICU for almost 54 hours. All through, her condition remained stable. Dr Patil says it will be some time before she starts walking. At the moment, all her parameters are normal. After a couple of weeks, she will have to undergo physiotherapy and only then will she be able to walk.
