Bowlers let us down badly: Ranatunga

Sri Lanka skipper Arjuna Ranatunga vowed to go back to the drawing board to help restore his team's flagging fortunes in one-day cricket, following the 157-run, Group 'A' match, defeat to India at Taunton yesterday.

Ranatunga, whose team was done in by a record 318-run stand, between left-handed Saurav Ganguly (183) and the stylish Rahul Dravid (145), that enabled India put up a formidable total of 373 for six, was in no mood to quit on a losing note.

"You cannot cry and do nothing about it," he said. "We have to accept that we played badly. I thought we were shaping up very well, but unfortunately it was one of the worst days in Sri Lankan cricket I have seen."

Ranatunga, who won the toss and put India in to bat, attributed the licking to some terrible bowling. "Our bowlers let us down badly. The ball was moving around in the morning. If you analyse this whole tournament, our senior guys have been performing well," he added.

Earlier in the tournament, the defending champions had lost to England by eight-wickets in the tournament opener, and then plunged to an 89-run defeat against tournament favourites South Africa.
