Proteas in line for cash bonanza

The United Cricket Board of South Africa, teaming up with sponsors, has offered the national side a 1.8 million rand ($297,000) incentive for bringing home the World Cup.

Dr Ali Bacher, managing director of the UCB, while announcing the incentive said, "It's not that we think they need egging on, but we feel if they do bring the Cup home then they will have earned every cent of it."

The bonuses come into effect from the semi-final stage. Getting to the last four will net the team 200,000 rand ($33,000); making it to the final will mean a 400,000 rand ($66,000) bonus; and the ante is upped to 900,000 ($148,500) for winning the Cup.

The team management, comprising coach Bob Woolmer and his support staff, will stand to share 240,000 rand ($396,000) in the event of a win in the tournament.

Standard Bank, the team sponsors, will contribute 300,000 rand ($49,504) to that kitty, but only in the event of a win..
