Statistical Highlights 26th match: South Africa v Zimbabwe at Chelmsford on 29-5-1999

This match was the 1468th in Limited over international (LOI) history.

This match was the 184th in World Cup history.

This match was South Africa's 169th and Zimbabwe's 122nd in LOIs.

This match was South Africa's 20th and Zimbabwe's 31st in WC.

This match was the 8th meeting between the two sides in LOIs and their only second in the WC.

The County Ground, New Writtle Street at Chelmsford at Essex was hosting its third LOI & WC match. The ground had hosted the New Zealand-Bangladesh encounter on 17-5-1999. The venue is regarded one of the most modern grounds outside the Test arenas in England, although it can only accomodate 5, 200 people.

The partnership of 65 between Neil Johnson and Grant Flower was by far the highest for Zimbabwe against South Africa for the first wicket. The previous highest was a paltry 11 runs between Flower brothers, Andy and Grant at Harare on 21-10-1995

. The partnership of 66 between Neil Johnson and Murray Goodwin was highest for Zimbabwe against South Africa for the second wicket. The previous highest was 53 between Grant Flower and Alistair Campbell at Centurion on 25-1-1997.

The wicket of Campbell was Donald's 200th in his 117th match. He becomes the first South African and ninth bowler in LOI history to do so. He now becomes the quickest to reach this milestone in least number of matches. Pakistani Waqar Younis had achieved his target in 118 matches in 1996.

Andy Whittall's three catches in the match was the only second such instance for Zimbabwe in LOIs. Alistair Campbell was the only other Zimbabwean to take three catches against Kenya at Dhaka on 19-3-1999.

Whittall also became the first Zimbabwean and the 11th fielder to take three catches - the maximum in a WC match. Incidentally he was sixth to do so in this WC.

It also provided the sixth instance of a fielder taking the maximum three catches against South Africa in LOIs. Sri Lankans Roshan Mahanama and Marvan Atapattu, Pakistani Salim Malik, Indian Mohd. Azharuddin and Australian Michael Bevan are the only others to do so.

The 66 run partnership between Daryll Cullinan and Shaun Pollock was South Africa's best in the WC. The previous best was the 41 runs between Peter Kirsten and Brian McMillan against New Zealand at Auckland in the 1992 WC.

Johnson with 76 runs and 3 wickets for 27 in this match, became the first Zimbabwean to score a fifty-plus and take three wickets on two sperate occasion in LOIs. Johnson against Kenya at Taunton on 15-5-1999 had scored a 59 and had also taken 4 wickets for 42 runs.

Johnson also became the only second all-rounder to score a ffity-plus and take four wickets in a LOI match againnst South Africa after Sri Lankan Kumara Dharmasena who at Lahore on 6-11-1997 had an unbeaten 69 and figures of 3-46 to his credit.

The partnership of 35 runs between Klusener and Donald was South Africa's highest for the last wicket in the WC. The previous highest was the unbeaten 33 runs between the same pair against Sri Lanka at Northampton during this WC on 19-5-1999.

It was also the highest by any team against Zimbabwe for the tenth wicket in LOIs. The previous highest partnership was the 23 runs between Pakistanis Mushtaq Ahmed and Waqar Younis at Sharjah on 6-4-1997.

The total of 185 was South Africa's lowest in the WC. The previous lowest being the 195 against Sri Lanka at Wellington in the 1992 WC.

It was also the lowest by South Africa against Zimbabwe in LOIs. The only other occasion South Africa were dismissed against Zimbabwe was at Harare on 22-10-1995. South Africa had then been dismissed for 239 in 49.2 overs.

This was Zimbabwe's first victory over the South Africans in eight LOI matches.

South Africa's first loss in the last five WC matches.

Neil Johnson now takes his tally of Man of the match awards to four in 19 matches. Earlier in this tournament against Kenya at Taunton he had won an award.

With this victory Zimbabwe has qualified to the Super Six with South Africa in Group A. If India qualifies, then Zimbabwe will take with them four points or else they will have two points if England qualifies.
