The Global Organisation of People of Indian Origin has suggested that a mechanism should be set up to enable prominent People of India Origin, who have retained their citizenship, to be nominated to the Rajya Sabha and vote in the elections.
The organisation has also demanded early action in granting dual citizenship to enable non-resident Indians and PIOs to play an effective role in the development of the country.
This demand was a part of a memorandum submitted to Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee during his visit to the United States.
The difficulties faced by professionals who want to have setups in India and in the country of their adoption were brought to the prime minister's attention during a half-an-hour meeting with GOPIO delegation's President, Thomas Abraham.
"They find it difficult to get licence in India," the delegation said.
The memorandum, released on Wednesday, said the government should encourage steps to acquaint those born outside the country with the rich and old cultural heritage of India.
It commended the work being done by the Indian Council of Cultural Relations, and said that the activities of the council need to be expanded to cover the entire cross-section of the Indian community.
Steps should also be taken to promote interaction between children of PIOs and the youth of India, it said.
