State Department begins probe into 'low morale' at US mission in Delhi

The State Department has begun a probe into the United States embassy in New Delhi after media reports claimed that morale had been badly hit during Professor Robert Blackwill's tenure as US ambassador to India.

State Department spokesman Richard Boucher told reporters in Washington DC on Thursday that Blackwill had not offered to resign and had not been asked to step down.

"Ambassador Blackwill is our ambassador to India. He remains our ambassador to India, and speculation to the contrary only hurts our relationship," he said.

The Washington Post reported on Wednesday that two State Department teams had flown to Delhi to find out what was going on at the embassy.

The Hongkong-based weekly, Far Eastern Economic Review, reported last week that a 'combative' Blackwill would be withdrawn from his post which he took charge last July.

The Washington Post said the ambassador had faxed a 26-page rebuttal of Inspector General Clark Kent Ervin's report on his performance to the State Department.
