US still wants to try Sheikh Omar

The United States has reiterated that it wants to try Sheikh Omar, the prime accused in murder of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl.

"We have made clear from the beginning that there was always a question when different jurisdictions want to try somebody and punish somebody," state department spokesman Richard Boucher said at a press briefing on Friday.

In the Daniel Pearl murder case "the Pakistani judicial system should go first and that is where the matter stands", he added.

He refused to "speculate" when asked about the US stand in case of Sheikh being issued a death sentence by the Pakistan court.
