Indian charges US authorities with
racial profiling

An Indian arrested in the United States a day after the September 11 attacks has said that he was singled out because he was a Muslim.

Ayub Ali Khan, 36, identified by the government as Syed Gul Mohammed Shah, was arrested on an Amtrek train heading for San Antonio, Texas, along with his compatriot, Mohammed Jaweed Azmath, 38.

According to an affidavit filed by Khan in US district court, federal agents accosted them as the train neared Fort Worth, Texas.

On searching through their baggage, the agents found box-cutters similar to those used by the perpetrators of the September 11 attacks, plus $5,500 in cash.

Khan stated in his affidavit filed to district court judge Lawrence McKenna earlier this week that the two had flown out of Newark on September 11.

However, their plane was diverted to St Louis in the wake of the attacks. He and Azmath then decided to head to San Antonio, Texas.

The arrest was based "entirely upon bare suspicion and racial profiling singling me out as a Muslim and a likely 'terrorist'," Khan said.

Both men were charged in November with operating a credit card fraud scheme.
