Pearl case: Pak announces plans to charge 4 people

The chief prosecutor in the Daniel Pearl case on Thursday said he would file charges against alleged mastermind Sheikh Omar Saeed and three others accused in the Wall Street Journal reporter's abduction and murder.

"The fact that we do not have Pearl's body will not affect the case. There is sufficient evidence to nail the suspects," Raja Quereshi said in Karachi.

Apart from the testimony of a taxi driver, Nasir Abbas, who claims to have driven Pearl to a restaurant and seen him shake hands with Omar before getting into a car with him, the prosecution's case rests on the confessions of two alleged accomplices of Omar and a few e-mails.

However, a discordant note was sounded by the lawyer for the alleged accomplices, who said that the confessions were extracted under duress.

Pearl was abducted in Karachi on January 23 while doing a story on militants in Pakistan.
