Zimbabwe was on Tuesday night suspended from the councils of the Commonwealth for one year following its violence-scarred elections, the organisation said.
The decision was taken by the chairperson's committee on Zimbabwe at its meeting in London under the chairmanship of Australian premier John Howard.
The committee suspended Zimbabwe on the basis of the recommendations of the Commonwealth Observers Group, which concluded that 'the (March 9-11) presidential elections were marred by a high-level of politically motivated violence and the conditions in Zimbabwe did not adequately allow for a free expression of the will by the elector'.
