US refuelling plane crashes in Pakistan

A United States military plane crashed into a mountain in southwestern Pakistan on Wednesday while making an approach to land at a forward operating base, the military said.

The KC-130 refuelling aircraft was on a flight from Jacobabad, Afghanistan when it crashed at 2045 IST near Shamsi in Pakistan, Navy Commander Dan Keesee, a spokesman for the US Central Command, said.

The aircraft was carrying seven Marines and it was not clear if they survived the crash.

"We don't know the disposition of the crew at this point, Keesee said.

An investigations was underway into the circumstances surrounding the crash, he said.

Pakistani military officials confirmed the incident, but said they were not in a position to give details.

The KC-130 is a multi-role, multi-mission tactical tanker/transport. It provides in-flight refuelling to both tactical aircraft and helicopters as well as rapid ground refuelling when required. It is also used for troop and cargo delivery, evacuation missions and special operations support.
