US troops end search for Osama in Tora Bora

After reducing Tora Bora to rubble and still coming up a cropper in its search for Saudi renegade and prime suspect in the September 11 terror attacks, Osama bin Laden, the US on Tuesday officially announced an end to its operations in the mountains.

The halt to the US operations came amid reports that American intelligence agencies had confirmed that Osama bin Laden had managed to escape to Pakistan.

There were also unconfirmed reports that the US has asked Pakistan permission to continue its search operations in that country.

Commander of the US operations General Tommy Franks was quoted as saying in a report that the weeks-long search through the tunnels and rubble of the Tora Bora complex in eastern Afghanistan had failed to turn up bin Laden.

Franks was also quoted as saying that in the next few days, the US military could gain custody of one or two Taliban or Al Qaeda figures of great interest to the United States.
