Close friends of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl were swept by a wave of deep anguish and rage as the news of his murder in Pakistan reached Mumbai.
"It is terrible..terrible...the Pakistani government will have to pay a heavy price for this," said Manjeet Kripalani, bureau chief of Business Week, while reacting to the news of Pearl's demise.
Manjeet, who knew Pearl since the autumn of 2000, said in a choked voice that Pearl was a very sweet and mild person. "I pray for his family," she said.
Asked about Pearl's family, Manjeet said Pearl's wife was not in Mumbai.
Thirty-eight-year-old Pearl was kidnapped on January 23 in Karachi after arranging to meet Muslim fundamentalist Sheikh Mubarak Ali Shah Gilani. He new of his murdered reached yesterday.
A Reserve Bank of India spokesperson, who knew Pearl, said: "I feel very sad...he was a good professional."
"Public at large will suffer as no journalist will venture out to dangerous territories following this incident," she said.
