Saudi renegade Osama bin Laden managed to escape hours before a joint team of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Pakistan commandos raided an Al Qaeda hideout in Faisalabad, Punjab province, on March 28, which resulted in the capture of his lieutenant Abu Zubaydah, a report said on Monday.
Laden stayed for three days in Faisalabad, a Pakistani daily, The Nation, reported.
Elaborate arrangements were made to conduct the raid, the daily said, adding that the hideout was found by tracking cellular phone transmissions through satellite.
Later, FBI officials accompanied by crack airborne commandos and marine contingents landed in the night and proceeded towards the hideout, the daily said.
Those in the hideout came to know of the raid only when the whole area was cordoned off and the commandos jumped over the walls, it said, adding that the operation was over after a brief fire fight.
Abu Zubayda received three bullets and was injured on the chest, arm and leg. He and his companions were overpowered and taken into custody, it said.
The Al Qaeda leader's identity was revealed during the interrogation of his companions.
