US and British forces are expected to launch strikes against bases controlled by Osama Bin Laden in Afghanistan within the next 48 hours, according to reports out of England.
The goal is to decimate bin Laden's forces and also take the wanted terrorist, dead or alive. The attacks will be launched in tandem with strikes against the Taleban's air and ground forces, the Observer reports.
Air and missile strikes aimed at destroying the Taleban's 20-aircraft air force will start the attack, with further air strikes aimed at crippling the anti-aircraft missile batteries and destroy Taleban tanks and other armour.
"America will act deliberately and decisively, and the cause of freedom will prevail," US President George W Bush declared on Saturday night after a meeting with his military advisers at Camp David.
In a live radio address, Bush said, "We did not seek this conflict, but we will end it. This war will be fought wherever terrorists hide, or run, or plan. Other victories will be clear to all."
Reports indicate that the first wave of attacks will be launched by aircraft based abroad US and British ships now in battle stations in the Arabian Sea, and will be calculated to negate the Taleban's ability to fight back when the second wave, of land-based attacks by troops of the armed forces of both countries, is launched.
A report in the Sunday Telegraph says that in addition to the airborne attacks, Special Forces units have been preparing to launch underground attacks at the network of caves and tunnels that bin Laden and his associates use as their command posts.
