Britain's SAS exchanges gunfire with Taleban: Reports

A four-member team of Britain's elite commando force SAS, which was in Afghanistan to gather information about Osama bin Laden, came under attack from Taleban forces outside Kabul, media reports said on Sunday.

The elite team -- known as Brick -- exchanged fire when they unexpectedly came across Taleban fighters in the foothills of Kabul late on Friday, The Mail and Sunday Times reported.

"There were no fatalities," a source was quoted as saying.

The Ministry of Defence and Downing Street refused to either confirm or deny the reports.

The SAS team, which entered Afghanistan from Tajikstan, was in the country for the last five days to seek intelligence about Osama bin Laden's whereabouts, locate land mines and find routes he might take out of the country, the reports said.

Both the papers reported that SAS had linked up with the anti-Taleban Northern Alliance.

A defence ministry spokesman told BBC News Online that the reports could not be confirmed or denied, citing operational matters.

"There is a lot of speculative material floating around. We never discuss the matters pertaining to the special forces," he said.
