FBI may deport Indian suspects

Mohammed Jaweed Azmath and Ayub Ali Khan, the two Hyderabad residents who had been arrested in the United States during the investigation into the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Centre and Pentagon, may be deported to India, police sources said on Saturday.

The sources said officials of the Federal Bureau of Investigation hinted at the possibility of deporting Azmath and Khan during talks with a senior police officer on Friday.

The FBI appeared to have found no evidence linking the two to the terrorist groups allegedly involved in the attacks, the sources said, adding that the American agency had detained the duo for improper immigration documents.

The agency reportedly wanted to know what punishment the two would attract in India for furnishing false information in their passports.

Sources said the FBI had contacted the Hyderabad police for an update on the inquiry being conducted against the two.

Police said cases of cheating had been registered against the duo for giving false names and dates of birth in their passports. But they added that the two did not have any criminal records against them.

The FBI said Azmath and Khan were arrested in Texas on September 11. They were later brought to New York for further investigations.

The police denied that Khan's father, late Gul Mohammed, had come from Afghanistan. It said Khan's family members had confirmed that Gul Mohammed had migrated from Baluchistan (now in Pakistan) a few years before independence and married Gul Begum of Raichur in Karnataka.

The police said they were investigating reports that Ayub had sent Rs 2.5 million to his family during the last three years and Azmath Rs 900,000 during last one year.
